Trial and Error

Today had some ups and downs, but overall Dad seemed to be making progress.

The day started out with some frustrations with rehab, but it got sorted out and he ended up sitting up with his brace on on the edge of the bed for nearly 20 minutes. He was a bit wobbly toward the end and needed some extra support from the OT team, but overall it was good progress, and I think we were all a little shocked by it. As Dad got tucked back into bed afterward, the OT asked him how he felt about what they did today, and he said, "That went better than I expected."

Questions about discharge from the hospital have begun. So far two specialties that are working with him have said as far as the care he needs from them, they're not doing anything in the hospital that someone can't do in a rehab facility. We don't feel like he's anywhere near ready to transfer to a residential rehab because he's so very needy and has so many scary things going on, but this is all new to us. No date is set and no plans are made yet. There are still some issues to work out before any transfer plans can be set.

Dad was mumbling a lot today, whether asleep or awake. When awake, we could tell him "You're mumbling," and he would speak more clearly. But he talked in his sleep pretty constantly all afternoon and nearly drove Mom crazy. The doctors are beginning to wean his pain medications down somewhat in hopes of helping with some of his confusion, mumbling, and grogginess.

His white blood cell count was high on Monday before the surgery to deal with the clots and abscess in his arm. It's back down now. Praise God!
