Music to Our Ears

We had a breakthrough this weekend! Dad's appetite still hasn't really returned, and his taste buds seem to be broken. Everything either tastes like grease or salt. But on Friday we grilled chicken and boiled some fresh sweet corn at home, and he loved it! Guess what we had for dinner five nights in a row? Chicken and corn! Last night's chicken was baked instead of grilled, but he still accepted it. We have sampled the corn from four different local markets. I think Hoen's Orchard wins the prize, should anybody in town want to go get themselves some delicious corn!

Last night several friends who my parents usually have a Bible study with came to the rehab facility to have dinner with Dad. Afterward he played his guitar and everyone sang some of his recent favorite songs with him. It's amazing how prominent mentions of feet and walking and steps and pain are in Christian music. You never pay much attention to trends like that until there's a reason to staring you in the face, and then it seems like irony is conspiring against you to see whether you'll laugh or cry. Last night, we did both. It was a really sweet night of singing together, even though the sounds coming from the room may have said otherwise at times while we all tried to figure out where the melody had disappeared to.

In case you need inspiration to cry, here are the songs we sang last night:
Scandal of Grace - Hillsong
Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) - Hillsong (How's that for an ironic subtitle?? Goodness...)
Hurt and the Healer - MercyMe
Emmanuel - MercyMe

Only three more days until the fixators come off! And then the following Tuesday (one week from today) Dad and one of the Occupational Therapists will come to my parents' house for a home assessment to determine what additional modifications may be needed before he can come home. In order for that assessment to happen, we have to get a ramp put in to get him in the front door! Time is ticking! Speaking of which, I have to go measure part of the porch for Dad's ramp plan. Of course he's drawing plans for his own ramp. Who would expect anything less?
